This final chapter tries to assess what we have learned and where we may be going. The discussion revolves around four topics: A tentative narrative of cell history; the enigma of life's origin; the causes of evolution's lumbering progress towards greater complexity, autonomy and agency; and whether evolution has direction or purpose.
