Here, some background on this obscure but intriguing set of maps is presented. This introductory chapter outlines the history of the maps and how they came to be in the possession of the present owner through an Italian family surnamed Rossi. It also provides an overview of some of the brief studies that were done on some of these maps in the 1930’s through the 1950’s, tracing some comments found in correspondence by various scholars of medieval history and cartography experts of the period concerning these maps.
