The Daughters’ Maps
The Daughters’ Maps
This chapter continues a systematic description of the maps and their intriguing depictions. Here, maps apparently signed by Fantina Polo and Moreta Polo are presented. These works include many fascinating features, such as Ptolemaic grid lines and toponyms, mentions of the famous (but mysterious) island of Antillia, and even Chinese place names. We provide reproductions of these works, translations of all the passages from the original Italian and Latin, and extensive commentary. In addition, there is a discussion of how these works compare with the known cartographic tradition, giving us some clues as to what these materials might mean.
