This chapter examines style in relation to the autopsied body of Samuel Johnson. It shows that the body upon which the Johnsonian monument is based was in fact in perpetual motion marred by a series of convulsive starts, tics, and gesticulations. This chapter also considers the body of Johnson's style against anecdotal traces of Johnson's physical moving, a ticking body that endures on the pages of literary biographies and medical journals.

Keywords:   style, Samuel Johnson, autopsied body, Johnson's body, literary biographies, medical journals
