The epilogue briefly examines the book’s resonance in the present day. In many ways, our current moment represents a focus on borders and national security that harks back to the 1920s. The daily papers are full of ongoing conflicts, local and national, over control of borders and migrants. They are full, too, of stories that suggest the human stakes involved. Border control has always been an elusive goal, and one whose pursuit has profound effects on individuals, communities, and the nation at large. Whatever policies are implemented in the coming years, an appreciation for this dynamic will remain central to the unfolding history of immigration.
