The Empire of Civilization
University of Chicago Press

This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this book, which is about the idea of civilization. The book is an exploration of the ongoing attempt to write about the universal history of civilization and the consequences that flow from it. It outlines how a concerted effort has been made and continues to be undertaken to impose a particular ideological rationale on the passage of history. The volume also argues that certain forces are at work in world politics to impose a purposefully charted “directionality” on our world's near-term history and future.

Keywords:   civilization, universal history, ideological rationale, world politics, near-term history
