This chapter explores the life and writings of Duke Galdan. It suggests that anthropologists need to develop ways to incorporate a “nonsociological” understanding of individual character, which can be seen as whatever, at a given time, a person trusts within himself and loads the evidence for him one way or the other. Duke Galdan is one of several people in this book whose particular temperament steered their actions, and hence affected the wider direction of events at Mergen.
