This chapter discusses the challenges that the cities of Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago, faced upon their transition to an actual city. When the cities of Philadelphia, Chicago, and Boston, faced the challenges that water raised regarding changes in the relationship of the individual to the collective, they were also looking for the best way to understand another major aspect of urban development: the transformation of landscape into cityscape. Cities are defined as built environments that humans have altered to suit their needs. Waterworks are compelling testaments of human desire and its ability to overcome, discipline, and even dominate nature.
