This chapter examines the transition of mathematics in baroque science from divine order to human approximation. It discusses the preparation and use of the inverse square law and analyzes Isaac Newton’s Principia. It also describes the works of Newton in determination the velocity of sound and the precession of the equinoxes and his demonstration that the attraction holding the moon in its orbit is quantitatively identical to the cause of heaviness at the surface of the earth.
