Problems and Resolutions in the Mathematization of Motion
This chapter examines the problems related to the mathematization of motion and the resolutions that were developed to address those problems. It considers Galileo’s belief that mathematics was a justification for the new practices of instrumental observation and Johannes Kepler’s opinion that it was a justification for causal arguments about the heavens. It also describes some of the instruments developed for the mathematization of motion. These include Christian Huygens’ pendulum, Rene Descartes’ compass, and Robert Hooke’s springs.
