This chapter examines the use of mirrors and lenses as cognitive tools in Europe during the medieval and renaissance periods. It analyzes the medieval and renaissance assumptions about the direct and mediated vision that served as backdrop for Johannes Kepler and Galileo’s thoughts. It also discusses how the lens mediated between fantasy and truth and produced knowledge different from what Aristotelians hoped to achieve by direct observation of natural phenomena.
