This chapter examines the theories and scope of the sanctioning models in computer simulation. It argues that it is incorrect to think that a simulation can only be useful and sanctionable if the systems it represents fall under the principled scope of its theoretical ancestors. This is because a dogmatic commitment to this expansive conception of the scope of theories obscures scientific practice and there are principled reasons to doubt the claim in the first place.
