The political repression that followed the military coup of 12 September 1980 left marks on Turkish society that still defy comprehension, but increasingly compel public attention. This period was also marked by an intense public discussion about national emotionality, focused on a popular music genre called arabesk. That discussion also continues to reverberate, though now in an atmosphere of nostalgia. This chapter describes Orhan Gencebay, responsible in the eyes of many for arabesk. It suggests that a new kind of star-citizen takes shape in aftermath of the political violence of the mid 1970s.
