(p.1) 1 Introduction
The Republic of Love
University of Chicago Press

This book focuses on three popular musicians—Zeki Müren, Orhan Gencebay, and Sezen Aksu—who are closely associated with the political transformations of the 1950s, 1970s, and 1990s, respectively. Nostalgia for these musicians mediates public engagement with Turkey's long liberal “moment.” Far from sanitizing the past, this nostalgia continues to pose complex and lively questions about public life at a popular level. This introductory chapter contextualizes the principal theoretical concerns (love and intimacy, the global city, neoliberal transformation) and the place (Istanbul, 1950 to the present day).

Keywords:   Zeki Müren, Orhan Gencebay, Sezen Aksu, Turkish musicians, Turkey, popular music, love, intimacy, Istanbul
