This chapter argues that both the conservation of biota and the sustainability of human welfare require the combination of community-based conservation and protected-area conservation. Each is essential, but neither is sufficient alone for the conservation and sustainability of resources. Unless human population increase in areas surrounding protected areas is stopped—even reversed—the future of conservation in both the community areas and the protected areas will be seriously compromised. At the same time, the most effective way to increase human wealth is to slow population growth.
