This chapter examines the image of Abraham Lincoln during the Great Depression in the United States in the 1930s. Heroes of the past played a role in the everyday life of people during this period and Lincoln stood prominently. His reputation as Man of the People resonated with the Depression Generation's economic worries and his emancipation of the slaves symbolized victory over foreign totalitarianism as often as racial integration at home.
