The introduction sets outs the main themes of the book, placing them in the context of both recent music-historical work on Rossini’s Italian operas and larger musicological concerns. After a detailed, chapter-by-chapter summary, it addresses some of the book’s more significant features, beginning with the issue of “discourse” and its various sources, and including the relationship between reality and representation, the focus on Italy, the inclusion of psychoanalytic perspectives and Deleuze’s philosophy of repetition, a dialogic approach to historical inquiry, and the question of modernity.
