The Catholic Church's observances of the Jubilee Year raise a central question: how do national churches interpret and implement Catholic social justice doctrine? This is a sociological way of addressing a more general question: what is the Catholic social imagination, and how does it get implemented? This book addresses this question with reference to the churches of the United States and Mexico. This chapter discusses the following: the U.S. context of the Jubilee Year and social justice ministry, the Mexican context of the Jubilee Year and the “pastoral social,” and the mission and challenge of Catholic social justice teaching. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
