As challengers-within St. Erasmus VOTFers were recurrently negotiating their status as both insiders and outsiders; both with the hierarchy they challenged and their fellow parishioners next to whom they sat in the pews. “We are the Church” they declared as part of their opening prayer at weekly meetings, but this involved a continual negotiation of collective identity in these contexts. A further layer that weighed on their minds tapped into a long history and life experience of Catholics in a region in which critical boundaries of power, access, and worth were constructed with sectarian boundaries.
