This chapter maps the American Jewish landscape of Israel advocacy, the infrastructure of socialization of American Jews' narratives about Israel, and how Israel relates to their Jewish identification. The chapter traces efforts to re-brand Israel in ways that attempt to diminish the experience of cognitive dissonance. It, therefore, foregrounds the importance of narrative as a key battlefield, often overlooked in the study of conflict and peace. The focus on narrative informs the chapter's examination of the instruments of silencing employed by the American Jewish establishment to control the scope of debate and constrain questioning. This chapter highlights the background from which the social movement of Jews emerged and which it seeks to transform by re-scripting the narrative of Jewishness.

Keywords:   BDS, Zionism and Antisemitism, Israel advocacy, brand Israel, American Jewish establishment
