This chapter evaluates the extent of social knowledge based on vocal signals in female African elephants. It examines how information on social identity is coded in calls and the distances over which this information remains intact. The chapter considers the causes and consequences of differences in social knowledge acquisition between family groups, highlighting the key role of the matriarch as a repository of social information.
