The introduction briefly contextualizes the history of land and environmental conservation in western Maputaland, setting the scene for the ensuing discussion about the making of the Ndumo Game Reserve, the return of rights of the Reserve to the Mathenjwa Traditional Authority, and its subsequent incorporation into the Usuthu-Tembe-Futi Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA). The section concludes with a discussion about the author’s positionality in relation to the borderlands, and outlines her commitment to making known women’s experiences of place and displacement, particularly with regard to policy-relevant discourses about land, livelihoods and environmental justice in south east Africa.
