The Cold War Is Not Over

(p.153) 5. The Cold War Is Not Over
Civic War & the Corruption of the Citizen
University of Chicago Press

This chapter suggests that the characteristic patterns and political pathologies of the Cold War continue as essential and even amplified features of the contemporary scene in the United States, arguing against the claim that the Cold War ended without a shot and without anybody being killed. It explains that the Cold War had the elements of a literal military war, from the application of violence to the creation of a culture of preparedness and sacrifice and from the gathering of intelligence to geopolitical maneuvers.

Keywords:   Cold War, political pathologies, military war, violence, culture of preparedness, gathering of intelligence, geopolitical maneuvers
