From Shock to Terror

(p.15) 1. From Shock to Terror
Civic War & the Corruption of the Citizen

This chapter, which discusses the transition of shock to terror in the experience of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, highlights the possibility that the so-called terrorists' drama will run almost automatically to predictable conclusions once it infects the body of our public life. It also explains that although the September 11 attacks only represent a very small portion of American history, some part of everyday has become September 11 because of the timelessness of shock drawn out by the time-filling capacity of television and other mechanisms of our culture.
