This chapter considers the wider importance of the temporalities of the Low Countries in the fifteenth century to the practice of history in the present. It asks how the temporalities of the period shaped later centuries, how the practices of devotional vision associated with the synchronic gaze and how languages of the old and new might feed into the dynamics of modernity. Finally, it suggests that careful transdisciplinary histories of temporality that engage with the fullness of time can provide one standpoint for reflecting critically on modern regimes of temporal discipline and social acceleration.
