The book concludes with an epilogue that examines the relationship of artifice and sovereignty in representations of the so-called “Bal des Ardents” (Dance of the Burning Men) at the court of Charles VI. Focusing primarily on Jean Froissart's account, the epilogue points to the historical enactment of wild men in a royal court and points to the construction of royal sovereignty on the fragile boundary between the domestic and the wild, the sovereign and the beast.
