This chapter presents case studies of two U.S. companies—Farrandsville Furnace and Lonaconing Furnace—that failed to replicate British smelting technologies and large rolling mill operations. It shows that American iron manufacturers could not match the productivity of the British industry until they solved the frustrating and expensive problems posed by their own country’s physical geography, mineral geology, labor supply, labor relations, and the vastness of American distances.
