This introductory chapter begins with a discussion of why the iron industry has not been a central part of the narrative of early nineteenth-century American industrialization. It then sets out the book’s primary objectives, which are to fill a significant gap in our understanding of American industrialization and to explain why some US iron companies swiftly implemented British technologies while others struggled or failed in the attempt, or never ventured to try large-scale production. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.

Keywords:   iron industry, American industrialization, iron companies, British technologies
