Becoming Petrarch

(p.169) Chapter Five Becoming Petrarch
The Medieval Invention of Travel
Shayne Aaron Legassie
University of Chicago Press

This chapter considers Petrarch's depiction of elite travel in a group of letters addressed to Cardinal Giovanni Colonna and collected in his Letters on Familiar Matters. It argues that, as a sequence, the letters to Colonna trace the thought process that leads to Petrarch's skeptical late-career attitude toward travel, an ideological stance closely related to the humanist's diasporic subjectivity.
