This chapter traces major developments in the evolution of pilgrims' geoethnographic investigations of the Holy Land. It argues that the changing objects and methods of pilgrim investigation are the product of a number of idealist and materialist factors--and not the result of an epoch-making epistemological shift.

Keywords:   pilgrimage, Holy Land, ethnography, geography, the Mediterranean, chivalric travel writing, clerical travel writing, travel writing about Europe, John Mandeville, Burchard of Mount Sion
