The introduction argues that the danger and sacrifice that faced medieval travelers made travel and travel writing morally suspect endeavors. Would-be travelers and travel writers responded to this circumspection by stressing the acetic dimensions of the journey and--increasingly--of the literate aptitudes required to write about it.
