Becoming a Spy

(p.27) 2 Becoming a Spy
The Hunt for Nazi Spies
University of Chicago Press

This chapter examines the process of becoming a German spy in France. It analyzes the interrogation reports of arrested agents and the letters written from their cells by those indicted to determine who spied for Germany in the nonoccupied territories between 1940 and 1942, their motives, and how they were recruited. The analysis reveals that the spies were ordinary people who did not attract attention and their ordinariness was all the more pronounced in that most of them were French nationals.
