Chapter 1 focuses on friendship, examining what friendship means to participants and the composition of their networks. In contrast to popular representations of college friendships as superficial, this chapter shows that most students—men and women—developed meaningful friendships in college. It concludes by describing the three types of friendship networks—tight-knitters, compartmentalizers, and samplers.
