It is shown through discussion of the diaries and memoirs of Mrs Piozzi in chapter 4, a shorter summary section, that a variety of visual signs were becoming legible as signals of male same-sex desire. The section ends by setting the scene for the material to be discussed in part two of the book which focuses on the nineteenth century.
