By the 1770s a symbiotic relationship had developed between satirical depictions of excess and personal attempts to use fashion to express or conceal various aspects of personal taste. This phenomenon is explored through a case-study, in chapter 3, of Sir Brooke Boothby and the image of the ‘man of feeling’ in relation to the performance and depiction of sensibility.
