Design, Hotels, and the Sustainability Paradox
Chapter Five looks at a set of housekeeping concerns that arose following the implementation of the Make a Green Choice program at Starwood Hotels and Resorts in Hawaii, which allowed guests to opt out of housekeeping. Although the program was advertised as an environmentally conscious option for guests, Brody’s interviews with Starwood housekeepers detail how the economics and design of the Make a Green Choice program made their workday unbearable. His analysis critiques the myth that sustainable design choices only ameliorate existing conditions, and he uses the instance of the Starwood in Hawaii to show how “going green” in this instance led to personal hardship for the housekeepers involved.
