The two previous chapters described the use of constraints and an algorithm to construct null matrices. Chapter 6 describes the use of a metric, or measure, to compare properties in the observed incidence matrix with those found in the sample null space. Metrics can be chosen to obscure or illuminate subtle species co-occurrence patterns for further scrutiny.
