The conclusion reviews the argument and raises the question whether there are three metaphysical systems in Descartes or at least how this investigation reconciles the two onto-theo-logical constructions of Descartes’ metaphysics outlined in previous treatments. Every reading of Descartes must take seriously these three beginnings or three “sailings.” Despite certain shifts and the debates his work evoked afterwards, Descartes’ overall work is coherent in how it speaks of the ego, knowledge, and metaphysics.

Keywords:   onto-theo-logy, metaphysics, cogito, three sailings, passivity
