Here we introduce the two further dimensions of “plot:” as conspiracy and as storyline. Viollet-le-Duc’s frontispiece image in his Dictionnaire raisonné allows us to envisage the three human agents of cathedral construction. Our three witnesses then assume their roles as cathedral builders: Suger as churchman, Villard, while not himself a master mason represents the masonic profession and Gervase of Canterbury serves as our budget provider.
