This chapter establishes a mnemonic space, a building plot, within which to begin to gather multiple stories of Gothic. Villard de Honnecourt, as interlocutor, mediates the intersection between the cathedral and members of an audience who long for representations and explanations. The rhetorical animation of the building recalls ventriloquism: the question arises as to who is the dummy. Figurative language provides a key tool for the interlocutor, leading him beyond the confines of the individual building to analogues beyond.

Keywords:   mnemonic space, ventriloquism, figurative language
