In conclusion, our three witnesses make a last appearance, now in chronological sequence, revealing the changed environment for Gothic architectural production over a one-century period as we go from dangerous appropriation and invention to the circumstances which favored the “spread” of Gothic, to the need to collect, to imitate and to explain to a lay audience. Villard’s imposition of storytelling upon databasing leads us to our current preoccupation with “Mapping” or spatial databasing, now through digital media, and the role of the narrative in the enterprise.
