This chapter describes the following: how teens develop clear preferences for leisure (of which consumptive leisure preferences are most prevalent) sometime prior to their senior year of high school; how they obtain support from their parents to start working, with the official goal of saving for college and an afterthought about earning “a little spending money”; how they select jobs that above all are conveniently located and offer desirable work hours, but which do not introduce them to career fields of interest or develop future work skills; how they spend virtually all of their earnings (and often take on debt) to maintain the American teen lifestyle; how they define good money management as having money to spend and knowing how it was spent; how they become the restless consumers our American economy craves; and finally how they gain early admittance to the work-and-spend cycle of American adults.
