Chapter 1 introduced four teens (Poppy Lopez, Lowanda Smith, Rob Robertson, and Kristi Kramer) with four distinct family, faith, and community starting points. To understand their starting points is to understand much of what differentiates the patterns teens forge during the first year out. This chapter examines the starting points of family, faith, and community in turn. But first, it addresses a question the author of this book often heard from teens: “Why are you writing a book about teens?” And a similar one heard from adults: “Why are you writing about the first year out?” This chapter begins on teen starting points by first describing this project's starting points.
