This chapter provides the historical background for Vasco da Gama’s arrival at Calicut and the religious confusion that followed. The Portuguese thought the Hindus were Christian, and the Hindus thought the Portuguese were Hindus. The unintentional cause of this confusion were the Muslim intermediaries that the Portuguese and Hindus used to communicate.
