(p.83) Chapter 5 Huon at the Castle of Adamant
Trade and Romance
Michael Murrin
University of Chicago Press

This chapter shows how a romancer constructed a story about a place he never visited, how he found his materials and put them together, what conception he had of the vast African-Indian zone, and what he thought a traveller would find there. This fantasy grows out of a commercial network and involves the interaction of four groups: the Genoese and the Portuguese, who were the explorers trying to go east, and the people of Flanders and Northern France, who sponsored the writer.
