This chapter examines the work of night scavengers or “nightmen” in American cities during the 1800s and early 1900s. It highlights the rapid increase in the number of nightmen during the mid-nineteenth century and the near elimination of their jobs with technological innovation in waste removal. It also describes other forms of night work deliberately scheduled to avoid interfering with the normal rhythm of urban activity. These include the delivery of food supply and selling of newspapers.
