This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this volume which is about the nighttime work, crime, transportation, and leisure in American cities from the introduction of the gas streetlamps in about 1820 to full electrification in the 1920s. This volume explores the role of steam-powered machinery and new manufacturing techniques in the explosive growth of urban industry in American cities. This chapter also provides several descriptions of nighttime life on city streets during this period.
