This chapter summarizes the main themes covered in the preceding discussions and presents some final thoughts. The case of the two women automata considered in this study integrates the history of protoindustrialism and early bourgeois culture with the history and criticism of modern industrial production and selfhood. There is ample evidence for the idea that concerns about unstable human-machine boundaries take on different forms (and different technologies) in different time periods and that, in the context of the two women automata, such concerns carry connotations that differ from the ones they carry today.

Keywords:   android automata, women automata, protoindustrialism, bourgeois culture, industrial production, selfhood, human-machine boundaries
