(p.102) Chapter Three The Profits of an Abbreviated Self
The Accidental Diarist
Molly McCarthy
University of Chicago Press

This chapter traces how numerous Americans caught up with the trend of using diaries to keep track of their daily lives. Most of them did not intend it to accumulate a lifetime record, but they did so inadvertently. They purchased diaries for numerous reasons: to track time, expenses, aid the memory, record appointments, or encourage self-discipline. As they kept on filling up the day to day entries, they faithfully filled it with summaries of their day. These filled pages become a comprehensive record of a person's life.

Keywords:   memory, appointments, self-discipline, expenses, Americans, self-discipline, lifetime record
