Empowering and Insulating the Farsighted Leader

(p.231) Chapter Thirteen Empowering and Insulating the Farsighted Leader
Bringing in the Future
William Ascher
University of Chicago Press

This chapter describes farsighted leadership. Several widely discussed dimensions of leadership styles can be linked to the potential for farsighted leadership. In many countries, the autonomy of the supreme court is a matter of political struggle. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) leadership is under some pressure to tailor its actions to serve the immediate needs of fund-raising. This leadership must consider current issues in terms of the precedents they set for issues that will arise in the long-term future. For farsighted government leaders, insulation from attacks by narrow interests can be provided by mass media with the desire and capability to report on the purposes and potentials of the farsighted initiatives. Term limits deny the electorate the opportunity to reelect its favored candidates and reduce accountability to the electorate. They also cannot fully insulate officeholders from external pressures.
